How to import the fix file into Shopify
The fix file from the Shopify catalog audit changes product type, vendor and tags. You import it in Shopify admin with Overwrite products with matching handles selected.
Steps
| Step | What to do | Details |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Keep a backup | In Shopify admin, go to Products, click Export, choose All products and a CSV file, and click Export products. Shopify downloads the file or emails it to you. Keep it: importing it again with overwrite puts the products back as they were. |
| 2 | Check the fix file | Open the file label.csv gave you in a spreadsheet. It lists only the products your fixes change. The first row of each product holds its title, vendor, type and tags; the next rows hold its other variants. |
| 3 | Open the importer | In Shopify admin, go to Products and click Import. Click Add file and select the fix file. |
| 4 | Select overwrite | Select Overwrite products with matching handles. Every product in the fix file already exists in your store, so the import needs this option. Shopify replaces only the columns that are in the file. |
| 5 | Import | Click Upload and continue, review the numbers Shopify shows, and click Import products. Shopify emails you when the import ends. |
| 6 | Check 2 or 3 products | Open a few of the changed products in Shopify admin and check the type, vendor, tags and variants. |
What the file changes
| Column | What happens on import |
|---|---|
URL handle | Finds the product. Shopify requires it. |
Title | The product's current title, unchanged. Shopify requires it. |
Vendor, Type, Tags | Replaced with the values in the file: your fixes, or the current value where you chose no fix. Tags lists every tag of the product. |
Option1 name to Option3 value | The current option names and values, unchanged. Shopify needs them to keep the existing variants: an import without them replaces the variants with one default variant. |
| Every other column | Not in the file, so Shopify keeps the current value: description, prices, SKUs, stock, images, SEO fields, status and the rest. |
Before you import
| Case | What to do |
|---|---|
| The audit read the store address | The file reflects the public product list at the time of the audit. If someone edited options or variants since, run the audit again first. |
| A collection uses a tag or type rule | Automated collections pick products by conditions such as "Product tag is equal to". If you change a tag or type a condition names, update the condition too. |
| An app reads tags or types | Filters, search and other apps may read tag and type values. Check them after a change of spelling. |
| The file is larger than 15 MB | Shopify's limit for one import. Split the file by product: keep every row of a product in the same part. |
